LOOHA Football

What is LOOHA?

لوحة — looha — is the board. The panel a craftsman works on, and the table a result is written into. Both meanings are meant.

Zellij is not carved. Every piece is cut on its own, by hand, and means nothing until it is set beside the others; the pattern exists only in the assembly. The players of this country are cut the same way — one in Rotterdam, one in Málaga, one in Casablanca, each in a different league, each judged on his own Saturday. Looha is the panel they are laid on: every match played anywhere in the world, in one place, so the shape they make together can finally be seen.

What the line promises

Every Moroccan, every matchday

It is a promise, not a slogan. Every player who has represented Morocco, at any level, on every day he plays — in whichever country he plays, and whether the match is a Champions League tie or a Tuesday night in the second division. The line is written in seven languages because that is where this country’s people actually live.

  • Every Moroccan, every matchday
  • Chaque Marocain, chaque journée
  • Iedere Marokkaan, iedere speeldag
  • Cada marroquí, cada jornada
  • Ogni marocchino, ogni giornata
  • Jeder Marokkaner, jeder Spieltag
  • كل مغربي، كل جولة

Which players are listed?

A player appears in Looha if he has played for a Morocco national team: senior, U23, U20 or U17. That is the only test, and it comes from a team sheet, so there is nothing to argue about. Dual nationals who have not chosen Morocco are not listed until they do. A player named in a Morocco squad but not yet capped is listed too, marked "called up", and carries no national-team record until he plays.

How is the Looha Score worked out?

Most big leagues publish a player rating and we show it whenever it exists. Outside those leagues it often doesn't, so we work out our own — the Looha Score, marked LS. Here is exactly how it is built.

Rankings that compare players across leagues, like the Top 5 and the country ranking, use official ratings only.

6.0Every player starts at
+1.6per goal
+1.1per assist
+0.3played 60 minutes or more
+0.5clean sheet, keeper or defender, 60 minutes or more
−0.4per yellow card
−1.5red card
−0.8penalty missed
Goalkeepers, in addition
+0.12per save
−0.25per goal conceded
+0.8penalty saved
4–10Never below 4.0, never above 10.0

How strong each league counts

When players from different leagues are ranked together — the top 5, a month's summary — each league's strength is taken into account. The ratings themselves are never changed. What do the numbers mean?

ScoreThe number at the right of a match row. Where the league publishes a rating we show that one; where it does not, we show ours.
LSThis number is the Looha Score — ours, not the league's.
RatingThe league's own rating, averaged. It takes five rated matches to mean anything; below that we show the Looha Score instead.
AppsMatches he was on the pitch for. A place on the bench is not an appearance and is not counted.
MinMinutes played. It is what separates a man who played from a man who was named.
G · AGoals and assists. In the same place a goalkeeper shows saves and goals conceded, because that is his equivalent.
G+A/90Goals plus assists per 90 minutes — per full match played, rather than per appearance. It answers how often a player actually produces, adjusted for how much he is on the pitch, so a substitute who scores every other outing is not buried beneath someone who simply starts every week. 0.40 is a goal or assist roughly every two and a half matches. It needs 450 minutes — five matches — before it means anything: one goal in a single appearance would read as 1.00 and top the table. Below that the figure is shown faintly and marked “needs 450′”, and those players are ranked after the ones who qualify — so a top scorer five matches into a season is still on the list, just not above men with a season behind them.
CardsYellow and red, beside the name. A sending-off for a second yellow is drawn as one red, not as three cards.
AvailabilityA cross means unavailable, amber means doubtful, a grey bar means out of the squad, a red bar means suspended. The date is the match the report came from — we never guess a return date.
SeasonsThe buttons above the table are competition seasons, July to June — 26/27 is the season being played. Early in one the table is only a few matches deep, so a rating needs five rated matches and G+A/90 needs 450 minutes before either is shown.
MedalsGold, silver and bronze mark first, second and third in the list as it is ordered right now, so they move when you change the sort. The player of the day is the best score of the day whatever you have sorted by — which is why he keeps his card at the top even when the list below is ranked by goals.
FilterOne button above each list holds five things: how to sort it, a position, whether a man has been capped for Morocco, the country the football was played in, and whether to show only the players you follow. The number on the button says how many of those are switched on. Choosing a measure also hides anyone with nothing to show on it — ask for assists and you get the players who made one. On a matchday the chips beside the button choose between the whole day, the men on the pitch, the finished matches and the fixtures still to come.

What do the positions mean?

GoalkeeperThe khatem, the eight-point star. Every zellij panel grows outward from it.
DefenderThe cross. It is what locks the stars together; without it the panel falls apart.
MidfielderThe rosette, facing every direction at once. Which is the job.
ForwardThe lozenge — the sharpest piece on the panel, and the one that points.

Tap the star on any player. The players you follow come first on every matchday, and any list can show only them.

Where does the data come from, and how often is it updated?

Match data comes from API-Football. During a match, scores and ratings update live; every finished match is checked again the next morning, and the unavailability list at the same time. Two things are entered by hand, and always marked: a long injury read in the press, with the date it was entered, and a Morocco match the provider lists late or wrong.

When is each thing updated?

Live during matches. Final ratings the next morning. The weekend page from Saturday to Monday. On our channels: the weekend preview video on Friday, the recap on Monday.

Which time is shown?

Every kick-off is shown in your own time zone, the one set on your phone or computer.

Does LOOHA carry betting advertising?

No, and it never will. Football audiences are sold to gambling companies more than any other, and this project will not take that money. LOOHA is free to read. If advertising appears here one day it will not come from a bookmaker.
